Madame Tussauds has over 200 years of extraordinary history of exquisite and true-to-life wax exhibitions starting back 1777. The history of this exhibition is as interesting as each of the lifelike and life-size wax figures of famous people, and how they make it.
Born under the name of Marie Grosholtz on 1761, she became the art tutor to King Louis XVI’s sister on 1780 and lived at the Royal Court in Versailles. Then she and her mother were imprisoned during The French Revolution. On her release she was forced to prove her allegiance to the Revolution by making death masks of executed nobles and her former employers, the King and Queen.
In 1794, Marie inherited Dr Philippe Curtius’ wax exhibition. It was also on the same year that The French Revolution ended.
Marie became Madame Tussaud when she married François Tussaud on 1795, but left him behind to take her exhibition on tour to the British Isles in 1802. Then established a base in London at ‘The Baker Street Bazaar’ with her sons in 1835. Then on 1850, Madame Tussauds passed away at the the age of 73 with a very accomplished and many creative wax artworks under her belt.
Madame Tussauds’ grandsons moved the attraction to Marylebone Road in 1884 but sadly, it was devastated by fire in 1925. It took 3 years to complete the restoration. In 1928, the restoration was completed with the addition of a cinema and restaurant.
Another disaster happened when the attraction, Madame Tussauds, was struck by a German World War II bomb in 1940, destroying 352 head moulds, and the cinema. For an exhibition franchise as big as Madame Tussauds, you wouldn’t imagine the damage it received yet stood the test of time, including the perfection of art and craft in wax-making to a mirror-like image precision.
Fast forward the next decades, Madame Tussauds opened in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Las Vegas, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai (China), Washington (DC), Berlin, Hollywood, Bangkok, Vienna (Austria), Blackpool (UK), Tokyo, Wuhan, San Francisco (California), Beijing (China), and Florida (California). Madame Tussauds opened in Sydney in 2012.
